Tall Ships

These magnificent ships of a bygone era sail back into Port Alberni every three years. Back in 2005, Port Alberni put itself on the map, with a hugely successful inaugural Tall Ships event, and organizers are already getting ready for the next festival in 2011.

Unlike the larger cities on the circuit, visitors here don't have to wait in long lineups and they aren't hustled through the ships. This is a down-home, intimate event. As a result, organizers were able to attract an even wider range of exhibitors and venders in 2008. 2011 promises to be even better.

2008 saw the Bounty, famous for the 1963 Hollywood movie, Mutinty on the Bounty, as well as the Nina, a reproduction of the ship sailed by Christopher Colombus, sail into Port Alberni's harbour. Along with the Lady Washington and the Lynx, they performed their popular mock Battle of the Alberni Inlet. Visitors can buy tickets to be on board during the battle.

Guest Reviews

It has been delightful

The hummingbird is noted, among other things, for its beauty and the attention to detail that it takes in building its nest. The Hummingbird is a wonderful compliment to that tradition. There was a light rain falling the day we arrived - an event unfamiliar to us desert dwellers but the sight of the Hummingbird must have touched a memory of home. We stopped on impulse just to enquire and decided to stay two nights.
